UMW's new University Center is a 4-story Jeffersonian-inspired structure that serves as a hub for campus activities and houses the campus’ primary dining center.
The first floor houses the kitchen and includes a freight elevator to service the dining center on the fourth floor. Also located on the first floor is a ballroom for university and community events.
The second floor features the campus “living room” (a cozy gathering place for students with warm colors, fireplaces, and comfortable chairs), retail dining including a pool table, an information desk, and a career counseling center.
The third floor is dedicated to student meeting spaces and organizations and includes 600 SF of workspace with computer banks and multiple meeting rooms for students and clubs to employ and reserve, as well as the Talon Lounge.
The dining center on the fourth floor includes seating for 800. Dining is buffet style with multiple stations where food is prepared directly in front of students. The fourth floor also features reservable spaces for group functions in the form of two multi-purpose rooms and an all-season balcony opening onto Ball Circle.
The new facility was constructed on the site of the former Chandler Hall. In addition to the demolition of Chandler Hall and construction of the new University Center, Independence Construction performed work on two enabling projects – renovation of two annex buildings for use by the displaced occupants of Chandler Hall and a new parking lot to replace spaces lost due to construction.
